A time of remembrance

As we approach Remembrance Day, we gather in honour and memory of those who have worn our nation's uniform. For many of us, this day is not only a time of remembrance but a profoundly emotional one—a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by generations before us and the struggles faced by our veterans today.

After serving 28 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, Remembrance Day holds a deeply personal significance for myself. My wife, also a veteran, carries her own visible and invisible wounds from her service and both of my grandfathers fought for all of our freedoms in WWII. I know firsthand that for many, this time of year can be particularly challenging. You’re not alone in that struggle. Many veterans, families, and first responders feel this weight too; it is crucial to remember that support is here.

This Remembrance Day, I’ll have the honour of laying a wreath at the Langford Cenotaph on behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada for Cowichan-Malahat-Langford. My executive assistant, also a veteran, will do the same in Lake Cowichan. Additionally, our riding association will have representatives at all Cenotaphs within CML to lay wreaths in tribute. If you attend any of these ceremonies, please say hello, introduce yourself and share your story. Every story is a piece of our shared history and community; a reminder of why we gather and remember.

To my fellow veterans and first responders - please, reach out if you’re struggling. You don’t have to carry the weight alone. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance navigating Veteran Affairs Canada or just a connection to others who understand, my team and I are here for you. We have a strong network ready to support you in any way possible.

This Remembrance Day, let us also reach out to those we may not have heard from recently—sometimes, a simple check-in can make a world of difference. Together, let’s honour those who served and those who continue to serve, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for King and Country.

Lest we forget.
